Rogers Statement on Voting for the 2013 House Republican Budget Resolution

Statement

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, MI-08, issued the following statement after voting for the 2013 House Republican budget resolution.

"I voted for a budget that will get the country on a path toward a better future that will create jobs in the private sector, see less debt, less taxes, and more opportunities for our children and grandchildren.

"It restores fiscal discipline in Washington, changing the mindset that has led to $15.5 trillion in national debt and new entitlements such as the government takeover of health care that is on pace to consume one-sixth of the American economy. It also exposes how the new law takes control away from seniors -- including stripping $500 billion from Medicare -- and gives that power to a board of 15 unelected bureaucrats, called the Independent Payment Advisory Board.

"The budget instead encourages economic freedom with pro-growth tax reform that will spur job creation and a simpler tax system that will put Michigan workers on a level playing field with our foreign competitors. It also preserves retirement programs such as Social Security and Medicare to ensure that they exist for future generations. The plan includes no changes for those in or near retirement and, instead of government bureaucrats, puts patients in control of their health care decisions.

"By putting America on a path to responsibly pay off the nation's debt that is stealing from the future of our children and grandchildren, this is a budget that helps keep the American dream alive. This is a budget that puts trust in America's citizens, not in the federal government, because we know that it was the dreams of our neighbors and family members to start a business, cure a disease, or come up with the next invention that made America great, not any government program in Washington, D.C."

The budget now goes to the Senate for its consideration.
